Creative Critical Reflection 3

Before I made my cover page, table of contents page, and article pages, I had to research a lot about the different magazines and movies out there. In order to really focus on which type of media we wanted to do our project on, we had to watch different movies and look at different magazines and studied the different conventions that each type of media used to make the product successful. Out of all the magazines and movies that I researched, I had finally decided that a magazine was what I intended to do from the beginning because it would really showcase my artistic abilities and photo taking skills. All I had to do was figure out the genre of magazine that I wanted to do, so I conducted more research and see which genre best suited me. I even took a small poll from my friends in order to assess which genre would they most likely be interested in and they said fashion, hence I made a fashion magazine. From all the research I had conducted, I had grown to produce such a product that reflected all the time that I had researched this genre of magazine. Through my research, I was also able to assess which factor in my magazine would attract my target audience.

Throughout the process of making the actual magazine, I was able to learn how to take pictures in different angles and use different editing applications to enhance my product and make it look as professional as the ones that I see on the racks of a supermarket. Like any other production, making this magazine took some drawbacks to make it how it is right now. Some issues that I faced were about my ideal location, schedule mix-ups, loss of internet/Wi-Fi, and decision making. The entire process making the magazine was easy; but due to the drawbacks, it was a lot harder to produce. The challenges that I faced making this magazine showed me a preview of how it would be when my product becomes a real media text and it made me grow to succeed despite adversity. Ideal locations are not always on your side when you want to take pictures outside of a studio. So, I was able to grow and coordinate my model's schedules, when it would be comfortable for them to do a photoshoot, and be able to watch out for the weather because proper, natural lighting is key to a successful photo. On my spare time, when I finish all my assignments, I go to YouTube and look at different tutorials on how to produce the perfect photos and how to edit the photos in different settings. I was supposed to use Adobe Photoshop, but I wanted to work on my magazine at home, so I learned to use different apps on my iPhone and the 3D Paint app on my computer to enhance my photos. I was able to grow and develop my editing skills without the help of a professional photo editing application. Studying VSCO on my iPhone made me learn how to edit photos like a professional.

By the end of the project, I was able to get a better handle on the camera that my teacher provided me with and be able to edit that photo to make everything still look natural and enhanced at the same time, in terms of lighting and contrast. Also, because I don't have a studio of my own, I was able to explore outside my house to be my studio and I ended up learning that natural lighting is the best lighting you can ever ask for. This project really made me see and feel what it is like to be in the industry and made me a better producer for my product.

Project Selection - Magazine

Print journalism is an easy choice to make; but, the production of the magazine itself can be easily overwhelming, but vibrant and aesthetically pleasing in the end. Print journalism screams the expression of a brand; it defines the brand itself. I've made a cover page of a magazine before and it actually turned out great, so print media might be a good choice -- considering that I have a little background knowledge. Based on the elements I learned from my class -- AICE Media Studies -- the magazine analysis and the blog samples did wonders in outlining my process. I saw what a magazine could look like, which is simple and not too overwhelming with vibrant colors or bold text designs. Other blog posts concerning magazine showed me what the blog should look like, what to do, and what not do. Table of Contents (Option 1)

This is my first draft on my table of contents. I have another idea for the table of contents, so that's coming up next. This idea came from Porter magazine. I really like it as it's simple and striking at the same time. This is what it's most likely going to look like, but the magazine has section titles and I might add it later on during the process because it separates different articles and ideas within the magazine. I might also add a little color to the section titles if I choose to do it because a plain table of contents doesn't give aesthetics. I'm thinking for the magazine title to also be colored, so it doesn't look bland. Most magazines I saw only had a single color and it seemed bland to me, which I didn't really like.
